YMCA pool closes for several months as renovations begins
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The “Y” officially closed the pool down for remodeling and will start draining it Thursday with construction to follow on Monday.
The pool is scheduled to reopen this fall, and officials said the upgrade is needed. “Yeah, I mean our swimming pool is 44 years old, 45 years old,” Troy Stickles, Director of Hasting Family YMCA, said. “It has a lot of plumbing issues, so we have leaks and it needs to be completely redone.”
Stickles said the new YMCA Aquatics Center will feature a five-person hot tub and a sauna.
“The goal is to have it done by September 1st,” Stickles said. “Our goal with closing it today was we didn’t want to interrupt any of the swim teams. Our youth swim team, the HYAC group just finished practice yesterday, and the high school season is over so we want to have it closed.”
Stickles said the “Y” is also making sure members have a place to swim during the summer.
“We’re still working out the final details but this summer,” Stickles said. “We’ll still be able to have some some swimming lessons, some fitness classes at the water park when they open after Memorial Day. We’ve always had a partnership with Lochland Country Club where we go out there and do fitness classes for their members and I think they can bring guest.”
Stickles said the “Y” has always had partnerships around the city. Adding, some of their lifeguards also work at the Aquacourt.
“We want our member to be able to go there in the mornings and do some fitness classes like they do,” Stickles said. “We’re still gong to do private swim lessons. So we’re going to partnership with them, so if people want private swim lessons we’ll be able to do that. And then we’ll just see kind of what happens throughout.”
Stickles said the partnership will mainly be tailored towards the “Y” exercise classes and private swimming lessons.
