KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - UNK hosted its first of three high school track and field invitationals Thursday, with participating programs in Class D making the trip to compete at Cushing Coliseum.

Featured events include finals in the girls 55-meter dash, girls long jump and boys high jump. Bertrand freshman Thunder Nelson won the latter, clearing a leap of 5′6″ on his first attempt.

“I was a little bit worried coming out, kind of scared, kind of nervous because junior high — it’s a big difference from eighth grade to freshman,” Nelson said. “You’re going to the big dogs from a little dog. Momentum, yeah, it’s going to give me a push. It’s going to give me great confidence to go on throughout the year. My goal is 6-foot by the end of the year. I want to make state freshman year, absolutely.”
