AURORA, Neb. (KSNB) - If you’re looking for a sweet treat to help cool off this summer, you’ll want to head to ‘JoJo’s Gelato and Grill’ in Aurora.

Opened in 2015 by Jim and Marni Danhauer after their honeymoon in Italy, it started off as a food truck.

Flash forward to 2019, and the Danhauers had a building of their own. Just in time for the pandemic. However, thanks to the design of the building, JoJo’s was able to thrive.

“When Marni and I designed the building, we designed it for a drive-thru. We had call in ordering, online ordering, which helped us a lot,” said Jim.

The community also rallied around JoJo’s, with one man visiting every day during the pandemic.

“He said this really saved me in the pandemic because it gave me something to do every day,” said Marni. “You don’t know the impact you have on people and their daily lives, so it’s always fun to hear those stories.”

Serving up American-Italian classic dishes, the main staple is the gelato that’s made fresh daily at the restaurant. Contrary to popular belief, gelato is not ice cream.

“Gelato is made with less air compared to ice cream. Ice cream is filled with 40-50 percent more air so you’re basically paying for the air in ice cream,” explained Jim. “Gelato is more dense and intense. It’s very delicious.”

Another fun aspect of JoJo’s is one of their servers, named Giatta. She’s a robot that runs food to tables, in order to help out the servers in their daily work.
