LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Governor Jim Pillen appointed Carolyn Bosn as the new state senator for the District 25 legislative seat Thursday afternoon. Bosn’s first day in the legislature will be Tuesday, April 11.

The announcement comes after Suzanne Geist resigned from the position Wednesday to focus on her campaign to become Lincoln’s next mayor.

“Senator Geist has worked tirelessly the last seven years for District 25 in the state of Nebraska,” Pillen said.

“I recognize I have big shoes to fill,” Bosn said after thanking Geist for her service and wishing her well in the upcoming election.

Two people were interviewed for the seat sometime within the last six to eight days, Pillen said.

“With an appointment, I’m not a believer in placeholders. We need the appointment to understand what it takes to maintain the seat for District 25,” Pillen said. “She’s gonna do whatever it takes to be the long-term senator of District 25 and I’ll be at your side.”

Bosn was born and raised in Columbus, Nebraska, where her parents still reside. She has been an adjunct professor for the University of Nebraska’s College of Law trial advocacy program. Prior to that, Bosn was a deputy county attorney in the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office. Her areas of experience have included juvenile law violations, child abuse, child neglect, domestic assault, and narcotics cases. Bosn received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Baylor University. She earned her Juris Doctor from Creighton University School of Law. Bosn is married to Reginald Bosn. They have four young children.

“As a senator I promise to listen, to learn, and to lead in this new responsibility,” Bosn said. “I recognize the importance of these last 33 days of the session and I’m grateful to Governor Pillen for granting me this opportunity and putting his trust in my promise to stand up for Nebraska values.”

Bosn said some of her priorities are law enforcement, community safety, protecting families, reducing taxes.

Lt. Gov. Kelly said, “New Senator Bosn has that sort of experience in law enforcement, in public safety, that I think is so valuable to have within the legislator and she brings that with her.”
