In The Kitchen With Joe: ‘Down South Bar & Grill’

DEWEESE, Neb. (KSNB) - When Andrew and Jaci Davis met in college at UNK out in Kearney, Andrew was focusing on becoming a speech therapist.

However, that’s not the career path he’d end up on.

“During my time in college I worked at a couple different bars and restaurants in Kearney,” explained Andrew. “I fell in love with it and so we kind of stumbled into it. We knew the previous owner and talked with her a little bit then ended up buying it.”

That bar he and Jaci bought? The ‘Down South Bar & Grill’ in Deweese, NE. Four and a half years later the restaurant is going strong, having made it through the pandemic, thanks to the support of the community.

“They keep coming back, so it’s great to see all the same people and new people that travel down here,” Jaci said. “It’s great to be in this small town where people really support you.”

With tons of food options like burgers, steaks, nachos and more, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Not to mention, the atmosphere in ‘Down South’ is family-friendly.

“We’re a small town family based restaurant. There’s many times they’ll come in, my children will actually be here underneath my feet, standing next to me holding my hand while I’m trying to take an order, or running back and forth out of the kitchen. On top of that, our staff, most of them have been with us since we’ve opened and they’ve become like family,” Andrew explained.
