Hastings Public Library kicking off Summer Reading Program this weekend
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Summer is a time for students to relax and unwind from the school year, but the Hastings Public Library also wants them to continue learning so they don’t slide back.
“It’s called the ‘Summer Slide’ for a reason. That is why it’s so important. In all facets, not just in learning, reading, it could be math, it could be science. It’s all of the educational components,” explained Samantha Rundle, the Programming and Collection Supervisor for the library.
In exchange for reading a certain number of books or minutes, kids teens, and adults alike can earn points as part of the Summer Reading Program.
This year’s theme is “All Together Now,” as the library strives to bring the Hastings community closer.
“Community, being part of a family, the importance of taking care of yourself, and diversity,” said Rundle. “That’s a very big part of it. Remembering things that make us the same, and forgetting what makes us different.”
This Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the library is hosting a free block party, where people can sign up early for the Summer Reading Program.
The program officially begins on May 30.
