Memorial Day weather extremes for Grand Island
May 25, 2023
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - As we head into the Memorial Day weekend, the weather looks to be somewhat tame. However, that hasn’t always been the case for the end-of- May and unofficial start of the summer holiday. While we typically have average high temperatures in the upper 70′s with lows in the mid 50′s on Memorial Day in Grand Island, there have been holidays where the temperatures have jumped out of the so called typical box. For instance, the hottest Memorial Day on record was back in 1934 when the thermometer seemingly ate a red hot chili pepper and recorded a high temperature of 103 degrees. On the flip side, the coldest morning low for the holiday occurred in 1947 with a rather chilly 36 degrees. How about some rain on your memorial day parade. The wettest one being way back in 1935 when 2.97″ inches dampened the red and white making for a blue day. Not all memorial days have seen measurable rainfall. Which is considered one hundredth of an inch or more. In fact, only 51 of the past 127 holidays have had rain. Although, in recent years, it appears there has been a rainier trend with the past 6 of 10 last Mondays in May being on the wetter side of things.
