What to do if you get stuck in the muck
June 2, 2023
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Thanks to recent rains, the grassy car parking at events this weekend or a muddy country road may allow for your car to get stuck in mud. When it happens, it’s frustrating and can mess up your plans. But don’t fret - here are several ways to get you out of the muck when you get stuck.
Before we get to what to do, let’s list what not to do. First, don’t hit the gas and spin the tires. Yes, you are frustrated and nervous, but hitting the gas pedal harder will only dig you deeper into the mud. Second, don’t stop once you gain momentum. If you succeed at gaining traction and moving your car forward, keep going until you are on solid ground. Third, don’t be stubborn. For the best outcome of this situation, it’s better to ask for help and have someone standing outside the car and directing you while you are inside. You will get out of mud more quickly. Also, if it’s safe, someone can get behind the car and push it to help gain momentum.
Now on to what you can do. Don’t panic. Get out of the car and assess the situation. See what can be done and formulate a strategy. Second, try rocking the car by going forward and then in reverse. This may help you to get traction. Another maneuver is the wiggle and digging. You can do this by turning your tires and make some space, use a shovel to remove some of the mud. Gain traction by placing wood boards or other items to create traction. And if none of these work, you can always call roadside assistance. They will send out a pro to get you back on the go.
