GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The 2023-24 school year is officially back in session for one area district.

On Thursday morning, students in the Northwest Public School District headed back to class.

At Northwest High School in Grand Island, they started off the new school year with a pep rally.

Principal PJ Smith said they are excited for a few things this fall including the new musical “Mean Girls” beginning next Thursday. They are also looking forward to fully utilizing their new football field as well.

Smith adds they are grateful to be fully staffed, adding seven new teachers to their roster.

“We’re at 100% staffed. We’re very blessed. We had to hire four English teachers, but we lucked out, Smith said. “We hired great English teachers, a math and business teacher, and a special education teacher. We’re excited to see what they can bring to our staff.”

Smith said the school has about 170 students per grade with about 80 percent of those kids being option enrollment. He said it shows that kids at Northwest High School choose and want to be there.
