Slightly cooler today, but don’t let it fool you as the heat machine kicks into high gear
August 20, 2023 - Evening forecast
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - While it was a cooler day today compared to yesterday, don’t let that get you into thinking we are done with the heat wave. Thanks to a cold front that moved through late yesterday, far northern areas enjoyed a nice break from the heat with highs in the low 80s. It was still hot across the rest of the area with highs in the low to upper 90s from central spots south. The cold front that brought us a cooler day today unfortunately stalled out just to our south and will return as a warm front tomorrow. Yes, this means the heat will be returning to the entire area tomorrow.
This evening and overnight will be steamy to muggy due to increased moisture at the surface from easterly winds today. There will be increasing clouds as we go into the overnight hours due to a swath of stratus clouds that will develop across the central part of the state. This will aid in keeping lows warm tomorrow morning. Lows tonight will range from the mid 60s northwest to the mid 70s southeast.
After a partly to mostly cloudy start to the day tomorrow in central and eastern spots, the sun will be out in full force tomorrow afternoon. Winds will be slightly breezy at times tomorrow out of the south southwest between 10 and 15 mph with gusts to near 25 mph. It will be hotter with highs breaching the century mark soaring into the low 100s in most spots. With the higher dew points, meaning high humidity levels, it will feel like anywhere between 105 to 110 degrees. Another muggy night going into Monday night as lows once again remain in the low to mid 70s. The heat wave continues on into Tuesday. This looks to possibly be the hottest day of the week as highs will sky rocket into the low to mid 100s across the region.
If you are looking for a cooler day, it won’t happen Thursday. Highs once again soaring into the low 100s. Those cooler temperatures you have been praying and hoping for, well they come at the end of the week as a stronger cold front moves through sometime Friday. Highs will retreat back into the upper 80s and low 90s Friday and finally return to the mid 80s for the weekend. Along with those cooler temperatures returns shower and thunderstorm chances with a slight chance of overnight and early morning showers and storms beginning Thursday night and continuing through the weekend.
