Tuesday fire in Grand Island now classified as arson

A fire on west Capital Avenue in Grand Island has been ruled arson related. Grand Island Police and the State Fire Marshal's Office is jointly working the case.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island Police say a fire early Tuesday morning is being reported as an arson.

Grand Island Firefighters received the call around 7:20 a.m. for an apartment at 2105 W. Capital Avenue.

Battalion Chief Brad Laub said when firefighters arrived on scene, they saw no flames, but did see heavy smoke coming from the second floor, where the fire was located.

Firefighters were able to get it out quickly but did have to evacuate the first floor.

Laub said they learned that the apartment wasn’t being rented at the time. He said damage is estimated to be in excess of $20,000.

Nobody was injured.
