HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Typically the first day of October features daily highs in the 70s. That wasn’t the case today as the early Autumn heat wave continued through the last few days of September spilling over into the month that hosts pumpkin patches and Halloween.

It was another unseasonably hot day today as we continue to see an upper level ridge persist across the central and eastern part of the country. Highs today slightly cooler than yesterday, but still well above average, soaring to near record levels in the upper 80s and low 90s. It wasn’t just the temperatures that stood out but also the vigorous south winds that gusted to as high as 45 mph in western parts of the area. The winds will back off some tonight but remain on the breezy side out of the south between 10 and 20 mph with gusts to around 25 mph. Expect partly cloudy skies overnight with lows in the upper 50s west to mid 60 east.

Tomorrow will still be windy in warm with highs in the mid to upper 80s and lower 90s. Clouds will be on the increase in western parts of the state as a cold front begins to makes its way into the state. There is a good chance of showers and storms in western spots tomorrow afternoon and evening. A few of those storms could be strong to marginally severe. As the cold front traverses across the area Tuesday and Tuesday night, a good chance of showers and thunderstorms returns to the area. There is a good chance of showers and storms as the front pushes through Tuesday afternoon and evening. A few storms could be on the strong to severe side. Primary threats as of now look to be large hail and damaging wind gusts. Highs Tuesday could be anywhere from the upper 60s northwest to the lower 80s southeast. The system will clear on out Wednesday and Thursday and milder temperatures will settle in. Highs in the 60s and 70s are expected. Friday through the weekend will be a little cooler yet. Most will have highs in the 60s with some even in the 50s. The coolest day is currently set for Saturday. Lows during that time could be a blend of 30s and 40s which could lead to our first frost of the season Saturday morning.
