HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Lainey Benson was on a mission this season.

The Hastings High senior finished the 2023 campaign with 752 total digs, good enough for the highest tally in the state regardless of classification. Next closest was Olivia Mauch of Bennington with 682, who just signed a National Letter of Intent with Nebraska on Wednesday.

Benson said she was surprised to know that she led the state in digs for the year. She signed to continue her career at Hastings College.

“I just think I never really would have imagined being at the top,” Benson said. “I knew I was close last year, but I think this year I had over 200 more than I did last year, which is just crazy. I tried some different things. I love to watch volleyball, especially Nebraska volleyball, so I just try to watch what they do.”
