Lincoln Police: Man kills woman, injures teen before taking own life in apparent murder-suicide
13-year-old called 911 saying he and his mom had just been shot
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Lincoln Police Chief Michon Morrow confirmed that officers are investigating another deadly domestic violence incident within the last month, after a man fatally shot a woman and critically injured a teenage boy before taking his own life.
The incident happened just after midnight Wednesday at an apartment near 22nd and G streets in southwest Lincoln. Officers responded around 12:10 a.m. after receiving a 911 call from a 13-year-old boy who said he and his mom had just been shot.
When officers arrived, they found a 44-year-old Lincoln man dead in a bedroom from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A 40-year-old Lincoln woman was also found with a gunshot wound. She was taken to a local hospital, but died from her injuries.
The 13-year-old boy, who was the 911 caller, was also shot and rushed to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. Chief Morrow said he is expected to survive his traumatic injuries.
Two other children, a 15-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, were also in the home, but were not physically injured. They were taken to the BraveBe Child Advocacy Center to be interviewed.
Police said multiple shell casings and a gun were recovered from the apartment. The names of those involved have not yet been released.
“This is another senseless and unnecessary act of domestic violence,” Morrow added.
It’s unclear if the man and woman who died were married but police said they lived together in the apartment with the three children. The man suspected in the shooting is the father of the 8-year-old boy in the home, police said. All three children attend Lincoln Public Schools.
“It is the actions of these perpetrators who we need to continue to hold accountable in our community for the violence that they inflict within their homes,” Chief Morrow said.
Lincoln Police wanted to remind people of the domestic violence resources available in the community including LPD’s Victim Assistance Unit, Voices of Hope and Friendship Home. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 800-799-7233.
