Central Platte Natural Resources District

Central Platte NRD is responsible for trees, soil, water quality and quantity issues along the Platte River from Gothenburg to Columbus in Nebraska.

Central Platte NRD is one of 23 Natural Resources Districts in Nebraska. It lies in the south central part of Nebraska, straddling the Platte River. There are 2,136,304 acres in the district. CPNRD extends for 175 miles from the Lincoln-Dawson Co. line on the west near Gothenburg, to Hwy 81 on the east near Columbus.

Responsibilities:

  • Soil conservation and erosion control.
  • Flood prevention, control/ channel rectification.
  • Drainage.
  • Groundwater, surface water & water supply.
  • Water quality, pollution control, solid waste disposal & sanitary drainage.
  • Fish and wildlife habitat.
  • Forestry management.
  • Recreation and parks.
  • Range management.

Eleven counties have land in CPNRD. All of Dawson and parts of Frontier, Custer, Buffalo, Howard, Hall, Nance, Merrick, Hamilton, Platte, Polk.

2010 Census population of CPNRD was 137,966. First Class- Grand Island, Kearney, Lexington. Second Class- Cozad, Gothenburg, Central City, Gibbon, Wood River, Shelton, Elm Creek. Villages- Doniphan, Cairo, Overton, Alda, Silver Creek, Duncan, Clarks, Chapman, Amherst, Sumner, Riverdale, Farnam, Hordville, Oconto, Miller, Eddyville, Eustis.
