Weatherization

THE WEATHERIZATION PROGRAM: The WAP makes it possible for low-income families to permanently reduce their energy bills. Contractors or crews install energy efficiency measures in homes occupied by qualifying low-income families free of charge. These are not expensive upgrades – the average cost is $8,209 per home. By reducing the energy bills of low-income families instead of offering aid, WAP reduces dependency & frees up funds for spending on more pressing family issues.

The Weatherization Program at Mid:

  • Serves 27 counties in south central Nebraska
  • Administers contracts from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE), the Department of Energy (DOE), and the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
Weatherization

Weatherization may include:

  • furnace & water heater inspection (if found unsafe can be repaired or replaced)
  • adding insulation in attics and walls
  • attic ventilation
  • insulating crawl spaces
  • installing water heater jackets
  • insulating water heater pipes
  • weather-stripping & caulking around doors, windows, and general heat waste areas
  • repairing broken windows and doors (possibly replacing them, if determined cost effective by the National Energy Audit Tool
