Tim Jones made a return to the Local4 weather team in October 2017.
Meteorologist Tim Jones is a Central Nebraska resident and a familiar face for local viewers. It’s a return to the station for Jones, who has spent the last two years working for a national weather broadcast network, WeatherNationTV.
“After spending time forecasting across the country, I realize local weather is where I want to be.”
Tim grew up in Des Moines, IA and always had a fascination with weather. He witnessed his first tornado in high school and was hooked on being out in the elements and experiencing weather up close.
"I was on vacation at Lake Panorama with my family and saw a tornado form on the other side of the lake. It was at least six miles away gave me the opportunity to watch it in awe. I was terrified and excited at the same time!"
Tim's passion for weather took a detour over the next few years while he played junior hockey, pursued his private pilot license and studied in the Business Aviation Program at The University of Dubuque. It wasn't until the 1990s when Tim began to put his passion for weather to use full-time when he began to chase storms, sell the video to many major news networks and enrolled in the Mississippi State Broadcast Meteorology Program.
During his career in television, Tim worked for numerous local stations and has always wanted to be close to or in Tornado Alley. Some of those stations include KREM-TV in Spokane, WA, KGWN-TV in Cheyenne, WY, KGAN/KGXA-TV in Cedar Rapids, IA, WISC-TV in Madison, WI and KSNB Local4.
Thousands watched Tim bring viewers coverage of the Pilger tornado on June 16, 2014. He says it was his most memorable weather experience.
"It was the first time in my career that I was able to show my viewers a tornado by using live streaming video. I have always been a firm believer in not just telling people about the weather, but actually showing it as well. It was an opportunity to heighten viewer awareness by showing the threat in real time."
When he's not at work, Tim loves to cook, enjoy a craft beer, participate in almost any outdoor activity and spend time with his family. Travel tops the list as well and he loves a good road trip.
Tim loves to meet new people so if you see him out feel free to stop and say hi!
