Abandoned Home Catches Fire in Grand Island
Authorities are opening a criminal investigation after a fire sparked early Saturday morning at an abandoned house.
Luckily, no one was injured in the fire in the 1100 block of E. 5th Street around 7:30 a.m.
The fire started in the garage of the home and was quickly put out.
According to neighbors, the home has been abandoned for nearly a year and a half.
Firefighters say there's cause for investigation because the home was unoccupied and the utilities are off.
"I never see any kind of bad things going on in this neighborhood," neighbor Bentio Casarres said. "It's been a pretty quiet neighborhood, so to hear something like this, with the house being vacant, no electricity, is kind of surprising."
Firefighters say most of the damage was contained to the garage.
