GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Firefighters and police officers in Grand Island kicked off their blood donation competition, the Battle of the Badges, on Tuesday. The departments partnered with the Red Cross to help them reach their donation goal.

Anyone can donate blood, then pick which team they would like to represent.
The annual Battle of the Badges takes place at the start of summer each year, which is when the Red Cross says is the slowest time for blood donations.
"The need for blood is constant," Red Cross Phlebotomist, Angel Ventura, told Local4 News. "You'll constantly hear it on the news, on the radio, whenever the Red Cross is coming out that need for blood is constant because you'll never know when someone is going to need it."
The drive will continue on Wednesday from 12 to 6 pm at the police station.
