UPDATE: Medical incident may have contributed to crash

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) Officials believe a medical issue may have been a factor in a crash that injured three near Hastings Friday afternoon. Information received from the Nebraska State Patrol indicated the driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, that was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Highway 281 may have been having the medical issue.

The driver of the Jeep, and two occupants of a Chrysler Town and Country which it collided with, received what the State Patrol referred to as minor injuries that were not thought to be life threatening.

All people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.

UPDATE: May 10 - 7:50 PM

The Adams County Sheriff's Office tells Local4 that three people have been hospitalized in a crash that took place just before 4 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Highway 281 and 82nd Street, but it wasn't the first crash involving one of the vehicles.

Authorities say a female driver of a red Jeep was first involved in a crash at the intersection of 22nd Street and Kansas Ave. in north Hastings. It was then that police say the woman drove onto Highway 281 and began driving northbound in the southbound lanes out of town.

Witnesses say the woman was driving at a high rate of speed and nearly crashed into four different vehicles near the intersection of Lochland Road and Highway 281. It wasn't until 82nd Street and Highway 281 when the woman ended up colliding head on with a southbound vehicle.

A life flight helicopter was called to the scene, but the Adams County Sheriff's Office could not confirm if any of the injured passengers actually got on the helicopter. They could confirm that three people were hospitalized, including the driver of the northbound Jeep.

Authorities say the woman was transported to Mary Lanning Healthcare with unknown injuries, and as of right now, there are no criminal charges filed against her.

The Nebraska State Patrol is the agency in charge of the crash investigation, but if criminal charges are to be assessed, those will come from the Adams County Sheriff's Office.
