Catching porch package thieves in the act

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Online shopping increases each year. This year's shopping season kicked off with record sales of $7.9 billion on Cyber Monday alone.

With many of these packages being left on front porches, it is a criminal's paradise.

Millions of packages ordered, delivered and then left on front porches, all at risk of being stolen away.

But doorbell security alarms are gaining in popularity, catching criminals in the act.

"It's a real simple install the instructions are in the box, 4 steps really," said Stephanie Frana, Windstream Communications. "So if you get notification that the package was delivered and you get home and the package is not there you can go back and check that, you can access that video and if someone did take the package that you didn't know, you can turn that into the local police department."

Also available are is the Smart Garage Hub that lets the delivery person put the package right inside your garage. It allows you to check the status of your garage door, open and close it remotely.

The convenience that these smart devices offer is unlimited.
"It's a nice heavy duty padlock that also connects to the internet, and place a code in this touchscreen," continued Frana.

The Smartlock is a very popular one as well.

"So lets say you have someone who comes to walk your dog, you give them their own unique code and you can see who is coming in and out of your home," adds Frana.

The Smartlock allows you to store up to 30 different codes that connect to the internet and you can change the codes remotely, anytime you want.

These smart devices have numerous dual uses.

Windstream is giving away these devices for the holiday season. Stop in the store at 321 N. Saint Joseph St. in Hastings or visit their website.
