HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The highly-anticipated apartment complexes that's expected to help grow the Hastings economy are currently under construction.
The area will be called North Park Commons sitting on 92 acres of land.
With the first ever extended stay hotel in Hastings up and running, My Place Hotel, the competition is just beginning. Just across the street a Hampton Inn is currently under construction and nearing completion.
"From that research they have seen that there is a demand and that a hotel should do good in Hastings and they is why they are willing to invest and put these two hotels up here," said Michael Krings, Executive Director - Hastings Economic Development Corporation.
On 31st Street, ground work has begun on the Pioneer Trail Flat Subdivision. Three buildings being built for a total of 84 units coming to the area.
Hastings has had an apartment shortage that some believe stalled the influx of business growth other communities have seen.
"It's kind of a chicken or an egg deal. We know that at any given moment there is 500-700 open jobs in Hastings. We meet with the businesses and manufacturers on a regular basis and they tell us one of the largest challenges to recruiting a work force is that there is no housing," continued Krings.
There is a total of three phases planned. The Pioneer Trail Flat Subdivision will include a phase II for a total of 164 apartments.
North Park Commons is looking to have a total of 300-400 units available. They also want to include some family housing along with commercial and retail businesses to help boost the Hastings economy.
