Hospital and nursing home evacuated in Genoa

GENOA, Neb. - Mandatory evacuations are underway for the town of Genoa in Nance County.

Residents are being asked to head to Twin River High School at this time as a Flash Flood Emergency remains in effect.

According to a storm report from the National Weather Service, the Loup River has overtopped the intake structure at Loup Power Diversion. The report from 3:45 a.m. Thursday said the canal may have also been breached somewhere near Highway 22 bridge west of the intersection of Highway 22 and Highway 39.

According to our news partner, News Channel Nebraska, they said Nebraska State Patrol is assisting with the evacuation but that it is difficult to get into the community. Nebraska Game & Parks are deploying boats to safely evacuate residents.

The 911 call center said the hospital and nursing home have been evacuated. In the report, they said people in residences with basements are filling with water south of Highway 22/39 junction. There is no safe evacuation route.
