Flooding of hotel rooms in Kearney could be devastating to economy

Kearney, Neb. (KSNB) - Due to many of the Kearney hotels being flooded hundreds of rooms are uninhabitable.

This It's expected to have a significant impact on the city budget for the fiscal year. Close to 400 rooms have damaged by water at various hotels. With a conferences scheduled for this weekend and next weekend, financially this could put the city's budget in jeopardy.

Flooding could be seen all over the city, streets closed, cars rerouted and numerous boats being sent out to rescue people stranded. Some people determined to get where they were going took of their shoes and walked to their destination.

The many conferences scheduled in Kearney possibly having to be postponed or cancelled could be disastrous for the economy.

"We have a basketball tournament coming in this week and we are working to see what we can do to not cancel it. Summer is a busy time and it is always busy in Kearney," said Roger Jasnoch, Kearney Visitors Bureau.

For most events, the hotel rooms are usually 100% full.

Tuesday was about managing the damage but Wednesday will be dedicated to salvaging conferences and keeping business in Kearney going upstream.

Exact dollar figures are unknown at this time but along with lost tax revenue, the city will miss out on money spent at gas stations, shopping centers as well as restaurants.
