Local shelters will be staying open longer and have a few extra things to give away to potential pet parents. In Grand Island, Voice for Companion Animals is hoping to get their name out there and help the animals they hope to send to the right family.

“With being an all volunteer organization it's hard to find hours where we can be available but the last couple of months we've been open for adoptions on Saturdays from 10-2 but with Clear the Shelters we're going to be open from 10-5,” President Robyn Mays said.

Right now they have about 15 cats and two dogs. The group tries to help seniors and veterans keep their animals by giving away pet food and litter and they take in the some strays and rescues.

“We're trying to get the word out. We do a lot of education as well and making sure the right dog or cat is matched with what people are looking for and their lifestyle,” Mays said.

They have over a dozen cats and a few dogs they have rescued and are wanting to working closely with them to find the right home.
