Students at Roosevelt elementary are joining other schools to collect canned food.

"We collect this food to kind of give back to the community," says Trevor Teichroeb, music instructor "Our student have big hearts here at Roosevelt elementary and they just want to give back because the community has done so much for them. "

As part of Gift of Love, schools in Scottsbluff and Gering are competing for movie tickets to the old Midwest Cinema. Food from the collection will go to local homeless shelters and food banks.

"It works like, the more cans you get, the more points you get." Says Hilario Vaquera-Martinez of the student council, "The more points you get, the more people you help."

The student council at Roosevelt says that they collected over 2,000 pounds of food last year, and they still need more non-perishable items.

"We would like if the Roosevelt kids bring more of this for people," Ariadne Flota of the student council , "if they don't have water, we can give em to them."

You can donate non-perishable food items, and drinks at select schools until November 30th during normal school hours.
