Authorities are opening a criminal investigation after a fire sparked early Saturday morning at an abandoned house in Grand Island.

Grand island firefighters were called to the 1100 block of East 5th street around 7:30 Saturday morning.

The fire started in the garage of the home and was quickly put out.

According to neighbors, the home has been abandoned for nearly a year and a half.

Firefighters said there's cause for investigation because the home was unoccupied and the utilities are off.

One neighbor said this morning's fire came as a shock to him.

"I'm kind of surprised because there's really no one that... I never see any kind of bad things going on in this neighborhood. It's been a pretty quiet neighborhood, so to hear something like this, with the house being vacant, no electricity, is kind of surprising," said Bentio Casares, who lives down the street from the home.

Firefighters said most of the damage was contained to the garage.

No one was injured.
