Grant helps condos go up in downtown Hastings
A $200,000 Community Development Block Grant has been approved for a downtown revitalization project in Hastings.
Downtown Hastings is full of unique stores, shops, businesses and apartments. Condos are on the way, changing things up a bit.
"A lot of people are renting and parking on the street and there is no place to keep your car. With this you can buy, you have a garage an elevator," said Jeb Brant, Brant Rentals.
The grant can only be used for the facade of the building. There will be changes to the north and south side of the building as well as the door and windows. Brant plans to keep the charm of the neighborhood but spice things up a bit inside.
The changes not completely decided upon, he says, "It depends on what people come up with. I plan to have exposed brick, archways, exposed beams, just a really, really cool downtown Chicago-style type feel."
The entire building is 20,000 square feet, each floor has about five thousand square feet of space.
He adds, "I'm creating a white box, I'll put the elevator in, I'll fix the facade, get the garage done and they can take over their area and design it however they wish.
A person interested can get in at about $50 per square feet as the city funds cheapen the square foot price.
The project should be completed by the end of next year. Those interested can contact Brant Rentals at (402) 984-7001.
