HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - For three decades, Hastings Catholic Schools have been putting on a special night for the community to come out and show support throughout the blue fundraiser. But with the limits on social gatherings they had to move the auction and night of giving online.
The BLUE fundraiser is one that brings in a lot of important money for Hastings Catholic Schools, when the pandemic started they found a way to keep it going. (KSNB)
For the 30th anniversary of the BLUE auction, not getting to dress up the gym and welcome the community inside is not what Hastings Catholic Schools envisioned. But with a lot riding on the fundraiser they put their heads together to find a way to do it online.
“It is so crucial the funds that come in because they're budgeted dollars and so they're dollars that we count on to be here for the school and for the children,” Foundation Executive Director Hauli Sabatka said. “We estimate about $612 per student is raised on a night like tonight.”
That money goes towards things from textbooks to keeping the lights on. On a normal night, they could raise $200-300,000. Saturday they are hoping to raise at least $100,000 through the auction and the donations.
“No matter what I think the people in the community have always been there for us and have understood the need for dollars that we are a tax free organization that's not getting tax dollars,” Sabatka said. “So we're just so thankful for the donors that recognize that and who are there for us year after year.”
People can bid on art made by students, appliances, or even some more austentatious items. Thirty years of the fundraiser was supposed to make Saturday a big celebration, so half of the items will be saved for a later time.
“We really wanted to honor the past because 30 years is a really neat opportunity. We didn't want to let that anniversary go by without celebrating it,” Sabatka said.
They hope this fall things will be back to normal and they can have another auction to raise the rest of the funds.
Bidding is open until 9-9:30 pm Saturday March 28.
