HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings Public Library has been closed for nine weeks, but librarians have been very busy behind the closed doors creating a new summer program that's going to look a lot different.
With social distancing, the Hastings Public Library has come up with new ways to keep the summer programs running. (KSNB)
The reading program will take place online and people can keep track of their reading goals. People not comfortable with online can call the library for assistance. The librarians said it has been challenging finding how they are going to roll out their videos and how to make it easy to do projects at home
“Luckily we have a really great staff who are so creative and innovative and they've come up with these super imaginative ways to bring the programs that we had been planning and altering them so they are able to work really well online,” Librarian Kristy Hruska said.
There are also baking, gardening, and other crafty events set to take place in June. Anywhere from 400-500 people tend to participate in these events. There will be kits made up of items created in the makerspace given out for people to do the projects at home. They still aren't taking books back but are coming up with a plan for check out.
“We are also working on implementing a contactless delivery program where we're going to have something set up hopefully by the middle of June as we get all the logistics figured out,” Public Relations Coordinator Morgan Karl said. “We're really excited to bring that in so people can get the books that they have reserved here at the library.”
The librarians said they miss having the patrons in the library and aren't sure when they can let people back in. They will be taking guidance from the city on how to reopen. They ask that people do not donate any books right now, but free books from the library are available in the paper box on the side of the building.
They ask that people go to their website and register for their different June events as well as the summer reading program online.
