HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The First Presbyterian Church is continuing their mission of giving back to the community by bringing back their annual coat giveaway to those in need.
They've been collecting coats for the last few months and now have more than 300 to give out. This is only the second year for the giveaway, but they say its growing quickly as more people are learning about it.
"We have coats in all sizes from toddlers up to extra extra large," Rev. Greg Allen-Pickett told Local4 News. "So hopefully there will be a coat for everyone who needs one. We don't think any of our neighbors should go cold in the wintertime."
Youth groups will spend Friday evening helping set up for the giveaway. The church says they want to teach them about giving back at a young age.
"We are a church that does a lot of volunteer work," Rev. Allen-Pickett said. "We get our kids involved in volunteer work at a very young age because we think it's important that they realize that part of living your faith, part of being a disciple is to volunteer and to help out our neighbors in need. Our children and our youth embrace that."
The church says the whole experience is beautiful. Not just for the youth or those getting coats, but also for people donating and knowing they're giving their item to someone in need.
"We had a member of the community who's wife had passed away," Rev. Allen-Pickett said. "He was really grieving and mourning her loss. She died a few months earlier and he hadn't been able to bring himself to clean out her closet, but when he heard about the coat drive he though 'wow, this is a way that my wife's legacy can live on.'"
The drive will be taking place on Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.
