Hastings close to opening solar farm
Hastings residents will soon be able to power their homes with solar energy. The City Council approved the rates for the solar farm and in August customers can start signing up.
“For the most part, the public has been very interested. We've had a lot of good support, a lot of interest from different companies and different customers. We're excited to see how quickly it does sell,” Hastings Utilities Marketing and Energy Supply Director Derek Zeisler said.
The farm is already under construction just west of the Municipal Airport. Customers can find out more information August 8th at the Hastings Public Library where a meeting will be held for utilities officials to answer questions.
There are several options people can sign up for and they can decide how much they want their power to rely on the farm.
“Not looking to lock anybody in the long term,” Zeisler said. “Would love for people to get in and stay in but at the end of the day if they find it's not for them or want to adjust their quantities as long as we have some available. The project is a community solar farm so it's here for the public.”
People will be allowed to have up to 80% of their power from solar. The website will go live August 12th and the solar farm will be completed in early September.
