Hastings receives grant to look into building a senior center

Hastings, NE (KSNB) As people piled into the Monday night city council meeting, there several issued to discuss and approve. One issue, the $15,000 Nebraska Economic Development Grant they recently received. They are exploring the possibility of building a center that addresses the needs of senior citizens.

"This all comes back to the Senior Services Center on the south part of Hastings going away over the past year," said Corey Stutte, Hastings Mayor.

They money is specifically from the Civic and Cultural center Finance Funds and has to be used according to guidelines. It will cover the cost of the feasibility study only.

"We are looking at if there are any needs in town that are currently not being met or addressed by our existing facilities," said Don Threewitt, Director of Development Services

Along with deciding if the center is needed, it will also include what part of town would be best as well as what it would cost. The city council members voted unanimously for the study to take place.

"I just want to be clear, this has nothing to do with building anything at this point, it is just seeing if there is a need here in Hastings and also where that need might be," continued Stutte.

The matching funds will come equally from the city as well as the county.
