SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. With the shortage of nurses within this area, representatives from health agencies in Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota and Wyoming participated in the Nursing Career Fair at Western Nebraska Community College.
Future graduates of Nursing made their way around the career fair to learn of opportunities within the area. For one local hospital, they say the opportunities are pretty high for new graduates.
“It’s very high,” said Erica Smith, BSN, RN, Surgical Coordinator for Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance, Nebraska. “We are willing to take new graduates.”
New opportunities for future nurses exist within the state of Nebraska and even surrounding states including Colorado, South Dakota and Wyoming.
“It’s important for people to know how many options there are out there,” explained Kristina Ainsworth, Director of Nursing for Bennett County Hospital in Martin, South Dakota. “I mean someone from Scottsbluff may have never heard of Martin before and they don’t realize the benefits they can get from working at a critical access hospital.”
The requirements for nursing students involve passing a background check, drug screening and for nurses, you must have a valid license.
For one hospital, they said they are willing to hire all the new graduates that they can.
“One of the graduates that walked up to me today asked me how many new graduates we were willing to hire and my answer to her was all of them,” explained Ainsworth.
And for one local coordinator, she says she ventured out before taking an opportunity in her area but says to make sure you know what is offered before you make the big move.
“I grew up in Western Nebraska in Kimball actually and I was the same way,” said Emily Stull, BSN, RN, Clinical Nursing Coordinator for Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance, Nebraska. “I went to North Platte and then moved to Denver to work at the large facility. I eventually came back to Nebraska because really all that you need is right here.”
Their goal is to hire as much staff as they can from these future graduates.
