HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - High school art students from all around the state descended upon Hastings College for the 4th annual Mural Day.

Thirty-six schools and more than 200 students took part in the competition to paint a mural as a team over the course of the day. Each team had 2-6 students selected by their instructors.
“Here they had to combine all those different opinions together to make on cohesive piece and so there was a little lack of flow at the beginning,” Grand Island Senior High Art Instructor Jerome Dubas said. “It's like getting everybody's personalities, respecting everybody's input and one vision made by six people.”
Students don't get to know the theme until right before they start. This year kids got to bring the humor with the theme of “memes”.
The judges are Hastings College senior thesis students and pick the top three at the end of the day.
“But knowing our judges they're looking for things that are characteristics of good art. Line, form, shape, depth, emotion, all those things. but this year's theme is memes so I have a feeling that they're going to be looking for a little bit of humor too,” Dean of Innovation and Creativity Chris Hochstetler said.
Instructors from the different schools say students get really excited about this event each year.
“It's nice to have an opportunity and every year to see this thing grow and see schools from further away,” Dubas said. “From eastern Nebraska all the way out in western Nebraska coming to Hastings to know this is a good place to be.”
The first place winner will have their mural displayed in the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center and a trophy. Second and third place will get to bring their trophies back to their own schools.
