The application process for the Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity is wrapping up on March 2 at 4:30 p.m.
People interested in applying can call in and begin a pre-screening process before beginning the application. Habitat looks at debt, income, credit scores, assets and more.
Families who are chosen then go through a certain number of classes and certain amount of training on both labor toward a house and financial education. The buyers must also put in at least 500 hours of their own time and effort toward the home; which is just one of the requirements.
"Every house, first of all, is a miracle that we build it. Because we build it with primarily volunteer labor and the help of the future home owners," Executive Director Dana Jelinek said.
Anyone interested in applying must live in the Grand Island area or have lived in the area for at least one year. To inquire about an application people can visit Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity at 502 West 2nd St. or call at (308) 385-5510.
Habitat for Humanity reminds people that reaching out is the first step in the application process and that just because someone may have previously applied and not been chosen it does not mean they can no longer apply.
