GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - If you're looking for a little fun in the sun with your good 'ol dad this weekend then the Grand Island Modelers association has an event for you. The group is putting on a fun fly to show off their model planes.
The Grand Island Modelers Association gets ready to take off for their fun fly.
Hundreds of pilots will be coming to the park just west of the shooting park to show off their flying skills. Kids can even take their shot at learning how to fly
“We even have what is called a buddy box system,” GI Modelers Association President Trey Salter said. “So we have two controllers and an experienced pilot will have one controller and we can give the other controller the child and allow them to fly and if they get into trouble we can take over and correct any mistakes the child made.”
The hobby is slowly losing interest, but this group says they are open to anyone learning more.
“We have about 50 something members, we have about 25 active members,” Salter said. “Some of those members are over the age of 85 and they don't get out anymore but we give them a free membership so they can attend meetings and have a voice.”
The event is free and starts at 10 am Saturday and Sunday. There will be free food and fun activities to share this Father’s Day weekend.
