When traveling around Nebraska, you will notice many areas where construction work is being done. The Nebraska Safety Council wants you to drive in these work zones as if the workers are members of your family.
April 9th kicks off the start of National Work Zone Awareness Week. The theme for 2018 is "Work Zone Safety: Everybody's Responsibility."
The Nebraska Safety Council (NSC) will host a press conference at 10 a.m. Monday in Lincoln. It will be in recognition of five Nebraska families personally touched by work zone or roadside crashes. Family members will recount their stories.
NSC has developed a social media and radio campaign that will run during April across the state. Governor Ricketts has also signed a proclamation recognizing the dangers to work zone employees, first responders and town truck operators working near the road.
According to the Safety Council, there were 13 fatalities in Nebraska work zones in 2016-17.
Officials say work zone crashes are avoidable.
You can make a difference by slowing down, paying attention and being away of driving conditions.
