Nutrition education program hits major milestone

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) Fifty years ago a need was seen on the federal level for programs to assist those in need with nutritional planning. That program is still going strong and serving that mission.

In Nebraska, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program is administered through University of Nebraska Extension offices. Joanna Heurmann from the Hall County Extension office says they use a classroom-like setting.

"We do all our programming through direct education," said Huermann. "We have a lot of local partners both in the Hastings area and the Grand Island area."

Adams County Extension Educator Deb Unterseher says they use special plans aimed to help through all phases of proper nutrition.

"People go to the store and they don't have a shopping list and they don't have a plan, so they overspend," said Unterseher. "So if they use the 'Chose My Plate' (plan) based on the five food groups, they can be sure to be nutritionally sound."
