OSHA issues penalties in 2016 Scottsbluff construction accident
Federal safety officials have issued citations and penalties in connection with a 2016 incident in Scottsbluff that left a construction worker injured.
DSI Mechanical and Western Sugar were each given a serious violation citation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration following investigation of the August 2016 incident. An employee of DSI fell through a hole in the second story flooring of the construction site as work was progressing on an expansion project at the Scottsbluff plant. OSHA officials say both companies were cited for failing to properly secure a cover over the hole in the flooring.
DSI Mechanical was issued an initial penalty of $8,149, but OSHA records indicate the company has contested the citation. Federal officials say Western Sugar, as general contractor of the construction project, has agreed to a negotiated penalty of $6,000, down from an initial proposed fine of $9,054. Western Sugar is also being required abate conditions that led to the fall incident.
Another construction company with staff working the construction site at the time of the accident also underwent an OSHA inspection and was found to have been in compliance with safety regulations.
