SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) -- A Scottsbluff man has been accused of trying to drown his wife in their backyard pond.

Scotts Bluff County Court records say 44-year-old Christopher Knaub is charged with attempted murder, two felony counts of assault and one misdemeanor count of domestic assault. Knaub's attorney didn't immediately return a call Friday from The Associated Press.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday. The records say Knaub already has pleaded not guilty to domestic assault.

The charges were filed after Knaub's wife told officers Oct. 19 that he had beaten and kicked her at their home and hit her with a chair after she tried to keep him from driving drunk.

She reported other beatings as well. She also said he'd tried to drown her in the pond about a month earlier, but a neighbor intervened.
