GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Between the bad weather and the holiday season approaching, the Red Cross has seen a large in decrease in blood donations. Winter is always a bit of a rough time for donors in central Nebraska with college and high school students having time off and being out of town.
The weather also plays a part in turnout with Grand Island's Red Cross losing more than 300 units of blood during the most recent snowstorm.
"Every day the Red Cross needs to collect 14,000 units of blood, " Red Cross Account Manager II Jeremy Aupperlee told Local4. "If you have major storms or holidays, there's someway you got to make up that difference. So this is our way of just asking please if you have the time and are eligible, come on in."
They are offering many incentives for people to donate. Currently donors get Amazon gift cards and starting next week they will be giving out free tee shirts.
