HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Downtown Hastings is getting a new addition to its streets; this time in the form of an ice cream shop.
Special Scoops set to open this Saturday
Special Scoops, located on the corner of St. Joseph's Avenue and 3rd Street, is aimed at prioritizing and hiring special needs workers.
Donna Bieck, the founder of Special Scoops, gained inspiration for the shop from her 17-year-old son, Aaron, who has autism and intellectual disabilities. Special Scoops will be the only restaurant west of Omaha that prioritizes special needs workers.
"It's been exhausting, it's been frustrating at times, but it's been so wonderful to see how fast this has all come together," Bieck said. "Our special needs community is so excited, they are so ready to get to work."
Bieck hopes Special Scoops adds something that the community has lost, in the form of an ice cream shop, and also gives special needs individuals a sense of belonging in the community.
Once up and running the store will be open 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. and offer eight flavors at a time but have thirty on hand.
