Three people, pet duck displaced in Grand Island house fire

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Three people and their pet duck got out of their home safely after it caught fire Monday night in Grand Island.

Fire crews reported to the home on West 14th Street just before 6 p.m. Once on scene, firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from the residence, and minutes later, they were able to determine it was coming from the basement of the home next to a stove.

The basement suffered heavy smoke damage into the thousands of dollars, and the home is uninhabitable at this time. The red cross is helping those affected, and Grand Island Fire and Rescue will continue their investigation into the cause of the fire Tuesday morning.
