Use caution while "salting" the driveway

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) If you are turning to a little chemical boost to help get ice off your sidewalk or driveway, the Adams County office of the University of Nebraska Extension has advice for you.

Educator Ron Seymour says some salts can be corrosive to metals and concrete, as well as harmful to plants or pets if not used properly.

"Anything with calcium chloride in them is pet friendly and not as corrosive", said Seymour.

Seymour suggests washing surfaces well in the spring and water plants well.

He also says do not use lawn fertilizers as deicing agents as they can hurt plants and run off into the water system.
