Vets' Home hosts Car and Bike Show fundraiser

KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - People couldn't have asked for a better day to check out an annual Car and Bike Show, and support our veterans.

The Central Nebraska Veterans' Home hosted their 21st annual Car and Bike Show Sunday.

Members checked out about 100 classic cars and bikes lined around the pond out back of the main building. Entries cost $10.

All the proceeds from the show will go toward the Home's "Staff for Santa" program, which allows employees to buy personalized gifts for members at Christmas.

"If they don't have family, we become their family," said Linda Lewis, organizer of the Car and Bike Show. "It's not really the importance of the gift. It's a gesture to show them that we appreciate them and just to give them a Christmas at home."

All the members will write down items they need or want on a list, and employees can use the money from this fundraiser to buy them.

The Staff for Santa program has been going on at the Vets' Home for more than 20 years. The Car and Bike show has been used as a fundraiser for the program just as long.

This was the first year the show was at the Home's new Kearney facility.

"We have a lot of turnout from the community. We have a lot of support from other veterans organizations, and other organizations here in Kearney, which is wonderful to have," said Alex Willford, administrator at the Central Nebraska Veterans' Home. "It's a great time for them, and then at Christmas it'll even be more special."

Willford said they're always taking donations for the program, which you can send to the Vets' Home.

He said they're looking forward to having the Car and Bike Show again next year in September.
