Weather causes rush for area emergency room
Driving safely isn't the only thing you have to worry about on icy roads, walking safely also needs to be a top priority.
The emergency room at CHI Health St. Francis has seen several people who fell outside and hurt themselves Monday, due to the icy conditions.
Doctors said broken hips or arms are some common injuries they see.
"It depends on your age, so if you're a little bit unsteady on your feet, you're more likely to go down," CHI Health St. Francis Emergency Room Medical Director Mike McGahan said. "What we see usually is broken hips." "If you hit your head, you can actually injure yourself fairly significantly that way," he added.
One way to help prevent yourself from falling is by salting pathways. Walking slowly and holding on to nearby ramps or railings can also help you balance and keep you from falling.
People are encouraged to check the weather and have the proper equipment before going outside.
