Woman adopts Wood River senior to make her feel special

WOOD RIVER, Neb. (KSNB) - One woman adopted a senior. Not to take home but to give her a gift.

"Just wanted to help out," said Tanya Waldman.

Tanya Waldman found her on a Facebook group called Adopt-a-Senior. A page created to honor them in the Grand Island community and surrounding areas.

"I just happened to get on and see Jess. I've known her growing up and I was so happy to be able to adopt her," said Waldman.

She adopted Jessica Cooper. A senior at Wood River High School. She's a straight-a-student and loves theater and music.

"Anything I could in the music program. So band, choir, show choir, plays, musicals, all of it," Said Jessica Cooper.

When her mom told her that someone wanted to adopt her. She thought it was cool.

"I was super excited. When I heard she was doing that. I was like oh that's so cute," said Cooper.

Cooper had no idea what gift Waldman would bring but when she did, she was surprised.

"I didn't know what she was going to bring like this whole box was a surprise because my mom gave her a list of things that she thought I'd like. Most of them are accurate. I really like them," said Cooper.

In the bin was some of Cooper's favorite snacks. There were soft drinks, which she is crazy about. There were also self-care items like bath bombs and a candle warmer. Waldman bought all of the things she loves.

"She sent me a list. Actually her birthday was just recent. So she sent me her birthday list," said Waldman.

So not only was this a graduation present but it was a birthday gift. Cooper just turned 18.

Cooper will attend Wayne State College this fall. She will major in music education.
