Bambino League shows there is a place for anyone in sports
Every Wednesday out at Crosier Parik in the summer the Bambino League plays softball and kickball. The league is made up of all special needs kids.
"You can't believe how fun it is. It is just them," Bambino League Commissioner Dick Urwin said. "There is a smile on their face any time you see them. They just have a wonderful time. You just fall in love with so many of them. It is just part of being there."
One Bambino you can always find with a smile on her face is Sherry Gray. Born with a learning disability, Gray has not let it stop her staying active and making sure everyone knows how important the Bambinos are to Hastings.
"It is something for the community to say, 'Hey, special needs kids aren't different. They're treated just the same," Gray said. "Special needs kids can play sports even if you're in a wheelchair."
Urwin has seen the Bambinos grow throughout the years and he does not plan on leaving it anytime soon.
"It is just very rewarding you know when the kids all get done they come and pat you on the back and it's just like I said it only takes an hour. That's all it takes," Urwin said.
The Bambino League is wrapping up this week for the summer but you better believe next year the Bambino's will be back with a smile on their faces, ready to play some ball.
