Bronco wrestling unable to hang on, fall to Northwestern 29-19

HASTINGS, Neb. - The Hastings College wrestling team opened up Great Plains Athletic Conference action as they hosted Northwestern College and fell 29-19.

The Broncos found themselves up late in the dual but was unable to close out the dual as Northwestern won the final four bouts to take the dual.

Kavika Aholelei (FR/Fullerton, CA) got things started off for Hastings at 125 pounds, after taking a 2-1 lead into the second period, Aholelei would pick up the pinfall to make it 6-0. Northwestern would answer right back with a pinfall over Max Stevens (SR/Oakdale, CA) to even up the dual.

Edrich Nortje (FR/South Africa) gave the Broncos back the lead as he picked up the only forfeit of the night.

At 149 pounds Austin Mitchell (SO/Pawnee, OK), would drop his match to Dante Preciado by a score of 16-4 before No. 9 Taygen Smith (SR/Amarillo, TX) would earn a major of his own as he picked up a dominating 12-3 victory to extend the Bronco lead 16-10.

Anthony Espinoza (SR) would give HC their final victory of the night at 165 pounds with a 6-1 decision extending the lead to 19-10.

From there, Northwestern rallied itself. The Red Raiders won four straight matches to seal the come from behind victory – decision, major, and back-to-back pins.

The Broncos will be back in action Saturday Jan. 10 as Hastings will host the Cusatis Open beginning at 9:00 a.m. in Hastings High School.
